Sykehusklovnene had our humble beginings in 2001 with our founder Tove Karoliussen and her clown Beate Crash Pling. Today we are a NGO with 30 professional actors/clowns associated with us. Sykehusklovnene is supported through funding and gifts from official, private doners and sponsorships. The managing director is Nina Elisabeth Eidem and Trygve Nordby is chairman of the board of trustees. Vibeke Lie is our Artistic Director.
The first hospital clown we know of appeared in a children’s hospital in London over 100 years ago. Today it is estimated that there are 50 hospitals clown-organizations worldwide.
Through the years, Sykehusklovnene has created a unique enviroment and our visits are now a regular part of daily life for the children at the hospitals we visit. Through improvisation and interaction with patients, carers and health workers, our clowns offer a positive respite in an otherwise challenging hospital experience.
Our hospital clowns visit children and adolescents on childrens wards five days a week at Oslo University Hospital (Rikshospitalet and Ullevål), four days a week at Haukeland Hospital in Bergen, four times a week at St Olav’s Hospital in Trondheim, twice a week at Akershus University Hospital, and once a week at Skien and Drammen hospital. We also visit the hospitals in Arendal, Kristiansand, Tønsberg, Ålesund, Haugesund, Elverum hospital, SSE and Sunnaas regularly every month. We run a pilot project in Tromsø.
